Background of the Study
Aging is associated with physiological changes that affect nutritional status, including reduced appetite, altered metabolism, and increased risk of nutrient deficiencies (Obinna & Adebayo, 2024). Malnutrition among the elderly is a growing public health concern, as it contributes to weakened immunity, loss of muscle mass, and increased susceptibility to chronic diseases.
In Kogi State, elderly individuals face challenges such as food insecurity, limited healthcare access, and poor dietary diversity. Understanding the nutritional status of this demographic is essential for developing targeted interventions to improve their health and well-being. This study seeks to evaluate the nutritional status of elderly individuals in Kogi State, identifying risk factors and proposing strategies for nutritional improvement.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing elderly population in Kogi State, little is known about their nutritional status and the factors influencing their dietary habits. Many older adults suffer from undernutrition or deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals, leading to increased health complications. This study aims to address this gap by assessing the dietary intake and nutritional health of elderly individuals in the region.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the nutritional status of elderly individuals in Kogi State.
To identify factors influencing their dietary habits and nutrient intake.
To recommend strategies for improving elderly nutrition in the state.
Research Questions

What are the main factors affecting their dietary habits?
What strategies can be implemented to enhance elderly nutrition?
Research Hypotheses
Poor nutritional status is prevalent among elderly individuals in Kogi State.
Socioeconomic and health factors significantly influence the dietary habits of the elderly.
Improved dietary interventions can enhance the health outcomes of elderly individuals.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on elderly individuals in Kogi State, examining their dietary intake and nutritional health. Limitations include challenges in assessing nutrient intake due to recall bias and individual differences in dietary needs.
